Do New Year’s Resolutions Work?

'The expression of madness is to repeat the same thing again and again and hope for a different outcome.' Albert Einstein didn't just formulate the Theory of Relativity, he also popularised this dictum that most fall victim to, in varying degrees.

This is painfully true in managing our health. With today's lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's and some cancers reaching epidemic levels, it’s obvious that Western Medicine, with its mechanistic methodology limited to fixing isolated organ systems and ailments, misses the integrated, mind-body-spirit understanding of the whole person. Lisa Durante reports.

WHY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS FAIL

49% of all resolutions made are related to a health objective - how to lose weight, to stop smoking or to exercise more.

48% fail by the end of January, and between 80-91% don’t make it to the end of the year.

With a PhD in Endurance Exercise and Aging close to completion, Vanessa Emslie, CENTUM’s Director of BioScienceIntelligence™ and Longevity, has been a Functional Nutritionist for 8 years. She knows the territory of broken promises all too well.

"Three reasons people fail at keeping their New Year's resolutions are that what they hope to do is unreasonable, they expect an unrealistic benefit or the person wasn't physically or emotionally prepared to make a change", she explains.

Too complex, too difficult, not sufficiently broken down into small manageable chunks; whatever the reasons, the body never lies. Whenever our bodies are in trouble, warning signals are emitted. The skill lies in recognising them to prevent deterioration and trusting science to yield an accurate picture of what's really going on, guided by an expert to measure, mentor and monitor our progress.

Vanessa clarifies, "Giving a pill for every ill is not the way to go. Using evidence-based methods and patiently investigating the underlying causes of disease, proactively working on prevention ultimately reaps greater dividends than merely supporting a client through a disease diagnosis. This is what we do at CENTUM Longevity. We are dedicated to doing whatever it takes to see our community live at 100% of their potential, both today and in the future."

REASONABLE RESOLUTIONS - CENTUM LONGEVITY MEMBERS SPEAK

“This year my resolution is to give more importance to my husband’s wellbeing in addition to my own. He is a workaholic and I don't want this to damage his health. Instead of buying him another random gift, I gave him the CENTUM Health Blueprint and he is excited to explore this bespoke smart lifestyle process. He's relieved that it can be conducted virtually too, so that's an added benefit for a business traveller like him.” Nabeen Taj

“Despite being a Triathlete, I haven't felt at my best for a while. My resolution is to improve my emotional wellbeing to see how this can improve my Ironman performance. Irregular sleep patterns have affected me all of 2022. This year, my CENTUM practitioner has explained to me how upgrading my self-care and putting meditation, breathwork and creative relaxation in the diary, will positively impact not only my race results, but, more importantly, my long-term health."  Robert Davies

HOW CAN CENTUM HELP?

A Cambridge University study of 22,000 people aged 45-75 years found if they stop smoking, eat better and exercise more - they could live 11 or 12 years longer.

Calculating and reducing biological age, rather than worrying about our chronological age, is another viable resolution to make if we take our health seriously. DNA testing in the Health BluePrint, is carried out with a mere finger prick. After the results come back from CENTUM'S partner laboratories in Denmark, Vanessa and her team can accurately assess the individual’s genetic propensity for ailments and lifestyle habits that don't serve us well. The process doesn’t end there of course. “It is our job to assess all the data and then come up with a workable lifestyle plan that includes a personalised diet, exercise and supplementation regime that accurately reflects your DNA, your personality and your lifestyle”, Vanessa says.

In addition to conducting her enlightening BIO-AGE Quiz sessions during regular community events such as the forthcoming ENVISION YOUR BEST SELF Daycation, which incorporates movement, Vanessa's Functional Health guidance with a delicious non-inflammatory gourmet lunch rounded off by a transformational Vision Board exercise conducted by seasoned Life Coach Elena Buriani, the chances of compliance with our New Year’s Resolutions is greater when reinforced by like-minded people engaged together in a meaningful activity that inspires and informs.

Vanessa concludes, "At CENTUM Longevity we believe that being optimally healthy is not a single resolution but the sum of many small changes. A consistent wellness lifestyle is the key to supporting healthy, active and vibrant aging. We take your health through incremental, supported steps that are monitored and measured. Together we get better and together we can strengthen our efforts by 100%, when we are truly willing to see health as an ongoing journey to be enjoyed."
